02 Statement of Intent
"With a Little Love" - *JJS*
How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?
Product 1 – Music Video
My task will be to create a music video aimed at a stylish audience aged 16 to 25. The video will target both men and women, especially students and people who want to find their significant other. At the center of the narrative will be an idealised and emotionally engaging story about a young man who will fall in love and will try to get a girl’s attention through charming but slightly awkward attempts. This will create a light and relatable storyline that will be particularly appealing to a young audience who will prefer narrative-driven videos with expressive characters. From the perspective of media language, the video will deliberately use stylistic techniques inspired by 1980s music videos: soft lighting, pastel colour palettes, and a dreamy mise-en-scène. These elements will help convey a romantic and nostalgic tone, encouraging the viewer to interpret the video as sentimental, warm, and visually appealing. In terms of representation, the focus will be on youthful romance, aspirations, and emotional sincerity. The main character will be presented as fashionable, kind, and slightly idealistic—qualities designed to attract a modern audience that will value authenticity and emotional openness. In terms of audience engagement, the video will combine elements of performance and narrative to sustain interest. The storyline will be simple and easy to follow, while the performance shots will help construct the artist’s star persona. The aesthetic references to 1980s pop culture will serve as additional appeal. I will draw inspiration from narrative music videos that blend stylisation and romantic storytelling, such as You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) and Cheri Cheri Lady (Modern Talking).
Product 2 – Website
My task is to create a website that promotes the artist and supports the release of the music video. The website will target a stylish audience aged 16 to 25, including both male and female viewers, particularly students and young people who are interested in music, fashion, and relationships. The website will act as a central platform where the audience can explore the artist’s work, learn more about their image, and engage with their content in a more interactive way. From the perspective of media language, the website will use a modern and minimalist design, with a consistent colour palette and clean layout that reflects the aesthetic of the music video. I will include a variety of images of the artist, both staged and taken from the music video, in order to create a strong visual identity and reinforce branding. The use of soft tones and balanced composition will help maintain a visually appealing and cohesive style. Navigation will be simple and intuitive, allowing users to easily access sections such as music, videos, merchandise, and additional content. The homepage will highlight the latest release and provide clear links for listening and viewing. In terms of representation, the artist will be presented as fashionable, approachable, and emotionally expressive, reflecting the same themes of romance and sincerity shown in the music video. The combination of professional imagery and more natural, candid moments will help construct a persona that feels both aspirational and relatable, which is likely to appeal to a young, modern audience. In terms of audience engagement, the website will include interactive elements such as links to social media platforms, a page with the latest content, and competitions that encourage users to share and promote the artist. This will help build a stronger connection between the artist and the audience, while also increasing visibility through online interaction and participation. The website will also reflect common industry practices by promoting music, merchandise, and future events in one place, while linking to external platforms for streaming and social media. Overall, it will work alongside the music video to create a consistent and effective promotional package.
How will your two products demonstrate digital convergence?
The website and music video will work together as a single promotional package. The video will end with a screen saver directing viewers to the official website and social media pages. The website's home page will feature the music video as well as a hyperlink to a behind-the-scenes page. Social media links will be displayed on every page to encourage cross-platform engagement.
